Is Your Restaurant Invisible to AI?
What we learned from GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) audits
We ran Express AI Presence Audits on three hospitality venues — a family restaurant, a café, and a cocktail bar, across three different cities — testing each one against six major AI systems. The results were a wake-up call.
The Shift Nobody's Talking About Yet
Guests no longer just Google “best brunch spot” and click through five tabs. Increasingly, they just ask: “Where should I have breakfast in Belgrade?” or “Find me a family-friendly restaurant in Limassol.”
ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, and DeepSeek answer instantly — pulling from whatever information about your venue happens to be floating around the web.
If that information is thin, outdated, or scattered, AI doesn't leave a blank space. It fills the gap itself — sometimes with your competitor's phone number, sometimes with a bar in Moscow that happens to share your name, sometimes with a menu you've never served.

Best overall score
in the sample
Presence on a generic
“family restaurants in [city]” query
Even the best performer was easy to find by name — and nearly invisible to someone who didn't already know it existed.
That gap — between being recognized and being recommended — is the single most important thing every hospitality brand needs to understand about AI-driven discovery right now.
Three Critical Mistakes We Found Every Time
The same failure points showed up in all three audits, regardless of venue type or city.
No official, authoritative source of truth
Not one of the three venues had a website built to answer AI's basic questions: what is this place, where exactly is it, what does it serve, how do I contact it.
Without that anchor, AI systems are forced to stitch together an answer from social media, directories, and guesswork — and guesswork shows.
The bar in our sample scored just 25% overall. Multiple AI models confidently attributed it to unrelated venues in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Paris, and Italy — because there was no single trusted page saying “this is us, this is where we are.”
Contact and social information that doesn't match across platforms
The most common failure point across all three audits. AI systems don't just omit missing details — they invent plausible ones:
- A non-existent Telegram channel, generated out of thin air
- A fictitious email address
- Facebook pages left out entirely
- Phone numbers and cities pulled from a same-named business on another continent
Every fabricated detail is a guest who calls the wrong number, messages a channel that doesn't exist, or simply gives up.
No contextual visibility — only branded visibility
Being found when someone already knows your name is the easy part. Being surfaced when someone asks “best brunch in the city center” or “places for a first date” is what actually drives new customers.
All three audits showed venues doing reasonably well on brand-name recognition and doing poorly to non-existently on category and occasion-based queries — the exact queries that bring in guests who've never heard of you.
One AI model consistently underperformed across all three audits, generating an entirely different business profile from scratch when official information was too thin to work with — proof that a weak digital footprint doesn't just mean “less visibility,” it means active misinformation about your brand.
What It Takes to Be Visible in AI
Based on the patterns across all three audits, here's the sequence that actually moves the needle.
-
1
Establish one authoritative source of truth
A dedicated website or landing page with your official name, exact address, phone, hours, menu highlights, and social links. This becomes the anchor every AI system checks against.
-
2
Add structured data (Schema.org)
LocalBusiness markup that spells out your identity, location, category, and contact details in a format AI and search engines can parse directly — not infer.
-
3
Standardize your NAP everywhere
Name, Address, Phone — identical across Google Maps, Instagram, Facebook, delivery platforms, and local directories. Every inconsistency is an opening for AI to guess wrong.
-
4
Solve brand ambiguity, if you have a common name
If your venue shares a name with businesses elsewhere, you need explicit disambiguation (“[Brand] + [City]”) reinforced everywhere your name appears online.
-
5
Build local authority
Mentions in food guides, local publications, tourism resources, and directories give AI systems independent, trustworthy signals — not just your own claims about yourself.
-
6
Publish AI-readable, occasion-based content
Content that explicitly answers the questions people actually ask AI: “family restaurants in [city],” “best brunch spots,” “places for a business lunch.” This is what closes the gap between brand recognition and category recommendation.
-
7
Monitor continuously
AI-generated answers change as the web changes. A one-time fix doesn't stay fixed — ongoing monitoring is the only way to catch new inaccuracies (or new hallucinations) before they cost you guests.
How ASTERIADA Helps
We built the Express AI Presence Audit because most hospitality brands have no idea how they currently appear across AI systems — and by the time a guest mentions “the AI told me something weird,” it's already cost a booking. Our ongoing GEO program covers:
AI Presence Monitoring
Tracking how you're represented across branded, category, and local queries.
Digital Footprint Optimization
Consistency across your website, directories, maps, and delivery platforms.
AI Content Strategy
Structuring your site and listings so AI systems interpret you correctly and connect you to relevant search contexts.
Local Authority Building
Increasing credible mentions across local media, food guides, and directories.
AI Reputation Monitoring
Catching and correcting inaccurate or fabricated information before it spreads.
Reporting & Analytics
Tracking your visibility, accuracy, and competitor representation over time.
Curious Where Your Venue Stands?
We'll run the same Express AI Presence Audit on your restaurant, café, or bar — six AI systems, four evaluation criteria, one clear picture of where you're winning and where you're invisible.
